Susan has been a part of the Character First!® community outreach initiative in the Florida Panhandle since it began in 2001. To date, she has participated in training more than 8,000 teachers, business leaders, and community activists throughout the tri-state area of Georgia, Alabama, and Florida in how to implement and sustain the Character First!® program. As Chief Operating Officer of Melvin Engineering, she is responsible for Human Resources, General Services, Marketing, and, of course, daily operations. Her focus with the Character Council of Florida is training, marketing and special events.

A diverse background in historic restoration and preservation and small business ownership has proven beneficial in her current responsibilities. A resident of Madison, Florida, she currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Girl Scout Council of the Apalachee Bend, is a member of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee, a Chamber Ambassador, Chairperson of the Chipola Conference Center Committee, and a member of the Opportunity Florida Economic Development Advisory Board. She and her husband, Harold, enjoy boating and day-tripping through the Florida Panhandle. Grandsons, Javie and Nathan give Susan the spark in her eyes.
